Student winners in research presentations at the Kentucky Academy of Sciences meeting

Three undergraduate students in the Department of Biological Sciences won awards at this year’s annual meeting of the Kentucky Academy of Sciences, with an additional three current or former students as co-authors! In addition, one of our graduate students won an award as well. Be sure to congratulate them on a job well done!

Undergraduate students

Glen Kalisz won second place in the Botany section for his poster presentation “Incorporating the plant collections of the Kentucky State Nature Preserves Commission into the Ronald L. Jones Herbarium at Eastern Kentucky University.” This poster was co-authored by Lameace Hussain of Eastern Kentucky University, Tara Littlefield of Kentucky State Nature Preserves Commission, and Dr. Brad Ruhfel of Eastern Kentucky University.

Ryan Donkin won second place in the Microbiology section for his poster presentation, “Assessment of antimicrobial resistance in pathogens responsible for causing bovine mastitis in Kentucky dairy farms.” This poster was co-authored with Erica Phillips and Dr. Marcia Pierce of Eastern Kentucky University.

Laura Mims won first place for oral presentations in the Microbiology section for her talk, “Antimicrobial Resistance of Bacteria Isolated Above and Below the Town Branch Wastewater Treatment Plant.” This talk was co-authored with Laura Peterson and Dr. William Staddon of Eastern Kentucky University.

Graduate student

Kari Dupler won second place for oral presentations in the Ecology and Environmental Sciences section for her talk, “Evaluating Wetland Quality: A Comparison of Amphibian Community Composition and the Kentucky Wetland Rapid Assessment Method.” This talk was co-authored with Michelle Guidugli-Cook, Dr. David Brown, and Dr. Stephen Richter, all of Eastern Kentucky University.
