Cancelled travel plans do not hinder rising Biology senior

Rising Biological Sciences senior and Honors Program student Nick Koenig was looking forward to spending Summer 2020 in Germany, studying under two internationally renowned professors. It was going to be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity! But then COVID-19 came and interrupted all travel plans. Despite the setback, Koenig has diligently continued his undergraduate research through the department's Herbarium, as well as field work in Letcher County at Lilley Cornett Woods.

"Of course I was excited to spend the summer in Germany," said Koenig, "but COVID has given me time to focus on the flora of Kentucky fbefore I graduate, which I am super thankful for."

Koenig has won many university and departmental awards during his tenure as an EKU student, including the prestigious Barry Goldwater Scholarship. Most recently, he was selected for a competitive and prestitgious German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), which would have funded his summer experience. He hopes to reapply again in 2021.
